Abstract/Summary:
There are many religions in the history of Punjab, Muslims, Hindus and Sikhs staggered mix for a long time, sectarian relationship is complex. Because each sect unbalanced social and economic development, the majority of Punjab Muslims are agricultural class, the body of the non-agricultural class is Hindus and Sikhs. Britain after the annexation of Punjab, based on the need of maintenance of colonial rule,deliberately propped up across sectarian agricultural class political forces, damaged the Punjab Hindus and Sikhs non-agricultural class interests, make the Punjab strengthened the contradictions. Around the partition of India, the Congress and the Muslim League competition for Punjab exacerbated communal tensions among the Punjab Islam,Hindus and Sikhs, Punjab became India’s most severe sectarian conflict in 1947.In March 1947, the West Punjab mass an eruption of communal violence, which accelerated the process of the partition of India. With the approaching of the partition,communal violence reached another high tide in August, first broken out in East Punjab,then spread to the whole Punjab. Sectarian violence in the process, because the collapse of the Punjab government system and the authority of inaction, makes Punjab into the anarchy in society, contribute to the deterioration of the situation in the sectarian violence, the Punjab in the partition with millions of people were killed in violence,migrating tens of millions of people, as India subcontinent before and after the partition of center of sectarian violence.Punjab in 1947 strengthened the sect has the occurrence of violent clashes with the upper level is closely related to the scramble for power and territory. Extreme sectarian group to incite and organize role on the happening of the sectarian violence, worsen sectarian violence. Sectarian violence, cruel and varied ways. The poor and women are the biggest victims of sectarian violence.The 1947 Punjab communal violence not only results in a large number of casualties and property losses, restore the Indian subcontinent national territory, but buried the bane of the India-Pakistan hostility, also intoday’s South Asia have a profound impact on the development of religious extremism.
