| Globalization has made it essential for different cultures to come into closer contact with each other. This challenges the universities, which have offered programmes for English majors, to formulate more effective training mode so to meet the need of the society in terms of interdisciplinary talents with innovative consciousness.The cultivation of qualified English talents can not be fulfilled without building up effective curriculum structures. To find out whether the existing curriculums for English majors are reasonable or not, the author conducts this study from such three aspects as society, learners and knowledge. Based on Maslow’s Need Hierarchy Theory, this paper analyzes the need of students, the need of society, and the need of scientific curriculum structures. Besides, after conducting a questionnaire and having some interviews, the author comes up with some suggestions for foreingn language universities to optimize curriculum structures for English majors.This paper has shown that in the curriculum structure optimization, we should put the demand of learners as the center, and social and meanwhile, consider the requirements of society and subject knowledge structure. The specific proposals are as follows. Firstly, the compound personnel cultivation mode should be set up. Secondly, content and model of curriculum should be enriched. Thridly, related specialty courses should be enlarged in scope and depth. Forthly, the proportion and types of the optional course should be increased. Fifthly, the proportion of practice should be increased. Sixthly, the entire process of employment guidance curriculum should be enriched. Seventhly, it should consider students’ knowledge structure in optimizing curriculum structure. Eighthly, it should stride across of the boundary of discipline, and set up the integrated curriculum. Finally, it should make students know more about surriculum structure. |
