An Analysis Of Domestication And Foreignization In Lin Yutang’s Tran Slation From The Perspective Of Ideology

It is important to transmit Chinese culture and it is domestic translators who should shoulder the responsibility. The application of domestication and foreignization has a deep influence on readers’ understanding and acceptance of exotic culture. André Lefevere points out that ideology is an important factor that influences translation strategies. To be specific, politics, religions, culture and other factors will affect translation strategies. André Lefevere also mentions that translators’ ideology(some ideas they agree with or some they are forced to accept) will influence translators in choosing translation strategies. Different translation strategies will end up in different translation works. The influence of ideology on choosing domestication and foreignization translation strategies can not be ignored.In this thesis, two representative translation works of Lin Yutang are selected, that is, English to Chinese translation Between Tears and Laughter and Chinese to English translation Six Chapters of a Floating Life, studying domestication and foreignization from the perspective of ideology based on André Lefevere’s theory of the manipulation of ideology. In these two masterpieces, Lin applied domestication and foreignization properly. By cases study of Lin Yutang’s works and from the perspective of ideology, the author has analyzed the reasons why Lin applied domestication and foreignization and their corresponding effects.In Lin’s two translation works, Lin, under the influence of social ideology and self-ideology, prefers to apply foreignzation in translating the Chinese to English work Six Chapters of a Floating Life to remain Chinese culture as much as he can and apply domestication in translating the English to Chinese work Between Tears and Laughter. From the large amount of the cases studies, it clearly shows Lin Yutang’s preference for translation strategies in English to Chinese translation and Chinese to English translation, which will be a guideline for the future translation practice.
