Influence Of Ideological Manipulation On "Foreignization" & "Domestication" In Translation

As cross-border communication gets common day by day,translation studies have been deepening in lines of theoretical and practical researches. Throughout translation history, theory and practice as two divisions of translation study based upon diversified philosophies are seen home and abroad. So this research adopts a theoretical claim at the end of the last century to analyze the application and influence of"domestication"and"foreignization"in modern translation activities.The American post-colonialism translation theoretician Lawrence Venuti considers the application status quo of the two translation strategies of"domestication"and"foreignization"a reflection of a barricade originated from colonialism a few centuries ago which inhibits an equalitarian cross-border cultural communication. Its embodiment is a preference of"domestication"to"foreignization"by English native translators when they introduce such minor cultures as Asia, Africa, Latin America and Low Countries into dominant ones commonly known as Europe and America under an ideological manipulation to further invade into minor cultures for the second time. That's why Venuti, with a critical attitude, points out that"foreignization"instead of"domestication"should dominate the translating of a minor culture into a major one so as to guarantee equality in international cultural exchanges.However, Venuti has neglected one important aspect of the equality issue concerning cross-border cultural communication. That is, it is a multi-dimensional process of information flow, one of which undoubtedly is a flow from a minor culture to a major one; moreover, a reverse as well as exchanges also exist between a main-stream and an alternative culture, stereotyped noble and humble under the circumstance of the second invasion of the major into the minor. When"foreignization"is advocated to dominate a translation of a minor into a major culture, we should dwell on the issue of what strategy to adopt to translate a major culture into a minor one. Starting from a perspective of cosmopolitanism, this research maintains that"domestication"should assume the task to protect the minor cultures in order to evade the phenomenon of minor cultures'silence in cross-border communication to ultimately fulfill the globe-village ideal of human beings.Some inspiring ideas coming to my mind during this research are, 1)A dualistic opposition in"lingua franca"has been established to call to our attention for the convenience of studying post-colonial translation. 2)Cannibalism has been further refined to compart the major from the minor, and to further clarify among the minor. 3) The concept of ideology has been extended to other academic disciplines, holding that ideology may distinguish each academic discipline from perspectives of its interaction with a particular society in which it is rooted with diversified geological domains and academic schools. 4)"Domestication of acculturation"defines a dynamic feature of culture development in global cultural communication resulting from integrating an alien culture into a native one during acculturation to have"domestication"based upon.The analysis of this research is mainly"comparative mode"and"process mode".The research will be covered by six parts.In Chapter One, introduction, an overview will be presented about a general situation of this research concerning significance, aim and main concern.Chapter Two deals with an introduction of relevant theories to this research, concerning choice of translation strategies of"foreignization"and"domestication".Chapter Three serves to unfold a synchronical and diachronical review of"foreignzation"and"domestication"in China and West.Chapter Four will appear in case studies to disclose a correlation between such translation strategies as"foreignization"together with"domestication"and ideology from perspective of politics, religion, economics, feminism, chauvinism, Culture and manipulation in non-literature translation. Besides, manipulation in non-literature translation is also covered.Chapter Five will give an answer to an issue:"foreignization"over"domestication"or vice versa in translation activities from an angle of both post-colonialism and cosmopolitanism.In Chapter Six, conclusion,a brief summery would reveal what this research has covered ranging from inspirations to a way out of the present predicament concerning minor cultures when it comes to an introduction of major cultures into minor cultural systems.
