Discussion On Chen Gonglu’s Historical Thought And Historiography Methods

Chen Gonglu is a historian who needs a further research in the history of Chinese historiography during the 20 th century. He made remarkable achievements in the field of the compilation of foreign history, study and compilation of Chinese history and historical data study and his view of history, view of historiography and historical methods did not only keep the trend of the time, but also made his individual character stand out. During the Republic of China, Chen Gonglu took the point of the view that the geography, inheritance, population and leaders have a great role in history progress based on his experience of history study under the influence of the varieties of views of history. With the founding of People’s Republic of China learning to a Marxist became the theme of that time. Chen tried to study and compile history by Historical Materialism, but did not be accepted by the mainstream academic circle. Compared with his choice of the view of history, he always stack to his own ideas about the historiography and the historical methods, that historians should put more emphasis on the textual research of historical data and the historical review, and use the methods and principles of comprehensive narration.
