On Translation Of English Novels Of Colloquial Style: A Comparative Study Of Two Chinese Versions Of The Catcher In The Rye

Novels of colloquial style are one of the most significant trends in contemporary literature. However, research on the translation of those novels is not extensive. The thesis focuses on the translation of English novels of colloquial style, with The Catcher in the Rye as its representative, and discusses the translation strategy of novels of this kind.Using stylistic marker theory put forward by Liu Miqing, and from the perspectives of lexical markers, syntactical markers and markers of figures of speech, the thesis selects, compares and analyzes some examples from two Chinese versions of The Catcher in the Rye translated by Shi Xianrong and Sun Zhongxu. It gives an in-depth research on how the style of the original text is reproduced in the translated books and proposes suitable strategies to translate English novels of colloquial style based on the possible skills the two translators have adopted. The thesis argues that Liu Miqing’s stylistic marker theory is an important theoretical instrument in translation of English novels of colloquial style by helping us analyze style of the original text. With the aid of the marker theory, the translator can find the appropriate Chinese version to reproduce the original style as much as possible.
