The thesis belongs to a report of translation practice. The material of the translation includes the Introduction and the first article of Part One of Developing Translation Competence, a paper collection of translation studies, edited by Christina Schaffner and Beverly Adab, from Aston University in Britain. The Introduction is a general description of the three major parts in the collection. The article, Competence in Language, in Languages and in Translation by Albrecht Neubert focuses on the overall features of translation competence and the parameters of translation competence. The thesis is divided into five chapters;the first chapter is the description of the task; the second chapter is the translation process; the third chapter is the theoretical framework that will be practiced in the translation process; the forth chapter is the case analysis; the fifth chapter is the conclusion and introspection in the translation process. The translator takes the functional equivalence, a translation theory initiated by an American linguist Eugene Nida(1969), as the translation theory, and literal translation and free translation is adopted as a translation strategy in thesis. Based on the translation theory and strategy, the translator is applying varied translation methods and skills in the different cases so that functional equivalence is achieved between the source text and the target text at the lexical, syntax and discourse level.
