| This is a report based on an English-Chinese translation practice. The source text consists of two academic papers selected from Journal of Design History, which are concerned with the design reform movements of Belgium and Italy in the second half of the nineteenth century. For the technicality of the two source texts, the translator should take into account the texts’ academic background and professional knowledge in order to make sure that the translation has conveyed both the surface semantic messages and its connotations.According to the text type theory, the source text belongs to informative type, which is characterized by large amounts of information, strict logical relations and complex structures of sentences. Considering this, the translator adopts Nida’s functional equivalence theory to guide her translation work. Nida said that to translate is to use the most appropriate, natural and equivalent target language to reproduce the source information by taking into consideration both the semantic and the stylistic features(Nida, 2001:65). By adopting this strategy, the translation can be disengaged from the constraints in the source text’s sentence structures. To reorganize the target text in a most idiomatic way can reproduce the information of the source text more exactly.The whole translation report can be divided into five chapters: Chapter One is task description, mainly talking about the background, reasons, targets and significance of writing this report. Chapter Two is concerned with preparations, chiefly stating the preparations for translation. Chapter Three is related to process description, briefly introducing the comprehension and organization process of this translation. Chapter Four focuses on case study, adopting the translation theories to study and analyze the translation difficulties. Chapter Five is a summary of this translation task. |
