A Report On The English-Chinese Translation Of How To Get Started In The Real Estate Appraisal Business (Excerpt)

This report is under the guidance of Functional Equivalence Theory.The translator selected Part one,Part two and some of Part three in the book,How to Get Started in the Real Estate Appraisal Business,as the original text.It is an informative text whose main function is to convey information,emphasizing the objectivity,accuracy and readability of information.The practice report briefly describes the author and his works of How to Get Started in the Real Estate Appraisal Business and the reasons for choosing this text,and analyzes the characteristics of the original text.In the process of literature review.This report introduces the development and main contents of Eugene Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory,as well as its adaptability in this translation practice.In the preparation stage,the translator divides the practice report into three processes,namely “pre-translating”,“in translating” and “proofreading”,as well as the relevant work in each process.Under the guidance of Functional Equivalence Theory,this paper analyzes cases from four aspects: lexical,syntactic,discourse and stylistic level.In equivalence at lexical level,such translation strategies as “reconstruction”,“transformation” “integration” and “supplement” are adopted to analyze the application of Functional Equivalence Theory in the paper.In equivalence at syntactic level,it mainly analyzes the translation of passive voice,attributive clauses and long sentences,to achieve maximum equivalence as much as possible.In equivalence at discourse level,the analysis chiefly focuses on cultural context and contextual context under the guidance of Functional Equivalence Theory.In equivalence at stylistic level,it desires to achieve the expressive function and informative function from the perspective of text types.The findings are as follows.Firstly,the strategies of “reconstruction”,“transformation”“integration” and “supplement” can solve most problems of collocation and part of speech.Secondly,in equivalence at syntactic level,priority is given to information accuracy and readers’ reading experience,which can solve the logical problems.Thirdly,in equivalence at discourse level,it is to improve the quality of the translation from contextual and cultural context.Last,the translation stylistic style can be better determined after analyzing the text types and language characteristic.
