Investigation On Pakistani Medical Students’ Chinese Learning

China’s rapid economic developmentattracted foreign students all over the world, in 2014, the number of foreign students in China reached 377,000, setting a record. According to oversea students’ professional choose data, oversea students select Chinese language and literature the most, mostly choose liberal arts major, the next is Medicine. Meanwhile, the number of oversea students in developing countries is growing too. They come to China to study clinical medicine. In 2014, the number of Pakistani students in China reached 1.336 million, ranking the eighthof foreign students in China. Pakistani students account for a large proportion of the total medical students in China.Xinjiang Medical University started to recruit students in 1992 for the first time, so far, has received a large number of clinical medicine students from Pakistan. The author used questionnaires to investigate, recorded students Chinese learning classes, by teaching practice experiences, and through talking with foreign language teachers, student managers, and then with a portion of student interviews, found some problems appeared in Pakistani Medical students’ Chinese learning. This article describes different aspects including the learning environment, difficulties, learning attitude, motivation and strategy. After investigation, we found that the learning environment has a great influence on students Chinese learning. For example, resource learning environment(such as teaching, curriculum and faculty), school environment, cultural environment and the living environment have significant impact on Chinese learning. At the same time the articles reveals: Chinese learning medical students’ Chinese learning materials are not various enough, the correct choice of materials help students to lay a solid foundation and a smooth transition to the professional carrier in the late stages of learning Chinese; adjustment of students’ curriculum helps students effectively absorb knowledge of Chinese; Chinese teachers relatively lack of medical knowledge, can’t contribute to improve the quality of teaching. During Chinese language learning, students have different difficulties in pronunciation, Pakistani students confuse vowel, hard to control the tone of Chinese characters. Also there are problems in terms of vocabulary and grammar. Students learning attitude is relatively casual, they don’t take Chinese learning seriously. It is also found that with the different tendency of learner motivation, different instrumental motivation, external motivation, internal motivation, achievement motivation, they use different metacognitive strategies, cognitive strategies, effective strategies and social policy frequencies, all those are changing. The author proposes some suggestions. First, provide a good learning environment, enable teachers to enhance students’ learning, and concentrate on key concerns related Chinese speaking practice. Activate students’ learning motivation, make the students understand the local culture, and make students aware of the importance of Chinese learning. Use Chinese as a communication tool.
