Artificial life is a new and rapidly developing discipline, turning out to be a new approach to the problems in physics, mathematics, philosophy, computer science, biology, anthropology and sociology, etc. However, it is rare to apply the artificial life approach to the study of language. The author chooses "An Artificial Life Approach to Language" as the translating text for the purpose of exploring the translation strategies and skills of English scientific paper through translation practice.With the guidance of Eugene Nida?s functional equivalence theory and based on the linguistic features and translation difficulties of "An Artificial Life Approach to Language", this report analyzes some specific English-Chinese translation cases in terms of the title, multi-disciplinary terminologies and complex sentences, aiming to explore the five translation methods and skills applied in the translating practice.Both the translation practice and the case analysis elicit the following perceptions of translation: in sci-tech English-Chinese translation, translators should handle the uncommon terms and long complex sentences flexibly by using appropriate translation aided tools and translation skills in order to achieve the fluency and the coherence of the target language besides semantic equivalence and accuracy. It is expected that the case analysis and skill summary of this report can provide useful reference for the translation of English sci-tech papers with new and creative perspectives.
