Literary translation plays an important role in translation, and novel translation also occupies a place in literary translation. The author chose Fleet of Time that is one of the representative works written by a young writer Jiu Yehui. With the humorous language, distinctive characters, following to the heroine of this novel,Fang Hui,people could go back to the the end of 90s of Beijing once again. Moreover, with the narration of the time span of ten years, this novel showed the readers the unique youth recollections of 80’s generation in Beijing. The theoretical basis of this report is Nida’s functional equivalence theory. This theory focuses on the effect of the translation and the response of the target readers. It requires that the translator should accurately convey the meaning of the original text, rather than be confined to the original language form. The purpose of this theory is to enable the target readers to try to get the same reading feeling as the original readers. This paper is a practical report on Chinese to English translation. The translation project is selected from chapter one and the first two sections of chapter two of the novel named Fleet of Time. This report was under the guidance of Nida’s functional equivalence theory.According to the problems encountered in translation, the author adopted the corresponding translation strategies and translation skills, such as literal translation and free translation, amplification, omission, the change of the voice etc.and gave specific case analysis from three levels of lexicon, syntax and rhetoric, and finally finished the translation practice report.Through the case analysis, the author found that under the guidance of functional equivalence, novel translation requires that the translator should not only faithfully and accurately convey the ideological content of the original works, but also take language features into account, such as words, syntax and rhetoric as well as to reproduce the artistic style and features of the original text.So the target readers can understand and appreciate the translation like original readers. At the lexical level, the translator should pay close attention to its specific contextual meaning;at the syntactical level, the translator should analyse the original sentence structure carefully by using translation strategies in a flexible way;at the rhetorical level, translator should make correct choice and conversion when necessary.
