In the contemporary world, mobile communication technology is an indispensable part of people’s everyday lives. The multitude of research literature addressing this technology gives rise to the demand for the translation of Chinese academic articles to be presented to international readers in both business and academia. However, technical vocabulary and terms connected to this relatively new technology consist mostly of neologisms and obscure terms. Due to this fact, its technical translation is considered to be one of the most challenging types of translation. This report mainly discusses the Chinese-English translation of The Evolution and Development of Key Technologies of Mobile Communication Systems for Highspeed Railway. The chosen article is a significant piece of writing to translate, as it is not only rich in neologisms, but also its translation can contribute to the promotion of Chinese technologies around the world. The report thoroughly analyses the translation both at lexical and grammatical levels. The analysis is conducted from multiple angles that are related to the typical features of the EST, which are specialized terminology, subject determination, active to passive voice conversion, and complex sentences. It is concluded that in performing Chinese-English translation, not only should the lexical equivalence be taken into account, but also cultural aspects and ways of expressing thoughts of target readers. Furthermore, considering the fact that terminology is the most crucial in technical texts, CAT tools should be adopted in order to ensure consistency in the translation of terminology. |
