CangLang’s remarks on poetry is a classic book for Chinese ancient poetics, its influence and value can not be ignored. "Miaowu" as one of the most controversial core concepts of CangLang’s remarks on poetry has become the focus point of scholars. The representative results of Yan Yu’s "Miaowu" study in the field of Sinology of North American mainly lie in five Sinologists papers ——they are Yeh, Chia-ying, Stephen Owen, James J.Y. Liu,Wai-Lim Yip and Lynn, Richard John. Currently there is no domestic scholar who has given a comprehensive introduction and analysis for these Sinologists’ " Miaowu" research, no more comprehensive and systematic research on themtherefore study of North American Sinologists’ " Miaowu " theory has some groundbreaking significance and reference value.Because each sinologist is distinctive and their theories are also different, so this paper will first discuss these five North America Sinologists’ " Miaowu " research by the dividing method of according to individuals, then give an overall study at the end of my paper. The "Miaowu" research of Yeh, Chia-ying and Stephen Owen is straightforward so that I put them into one chapter, the other four are arranged according to the year of birth. During the specific analysis for each Sinologist’s view of "Miaowu", the paper take an interpretation way from introducing the overall theory of every Sinologist to their exposition of the formation and concrete meanings of "Miaowu". In a word, different theoretical thinking angles result in Sinologists’ various "Miaowu" study. Yeh, Chia-ying takes "Xingfagandong" as her core idea, so she believes that only objects triggered people’s inner sincere emotion can achieve the "Miaowu"; Stephen Owen is committed to breaking the traditional poetics "history of ideas", therefore, he pays attention to text reading and unbound means of research and criticism; Starting from his dream of " an eventual universal theory of literature ", James J.Y. Liu devotes himself to a new frame work for Chinese poetics system, then he puts forward the branch of " metaphysical " theory, within which he explains the metaphysical connotations of "Miaowu". Wai-Lim Yip takes the Taoist aesthetics as his guiding ideology and thinks that "Miaowu" with Taoist detached spirit of "excellent inspiration". Lynn, Richard Johnis closest to the traditional classical poetics study’s way, who focuses on the Confucian "orthodoxy" concept, and shows us both form and spiritual meanings of "Miaowu". In addition to giving an introduction and explanation on these Sinologists’ "Miaowu" study, the thesis also further analyses the significance and the insufficiency of each Sinologist’s research at the end of each chapter, and in the fifth chapter, I explore the unique characteristics of all North American Sinologists’ "Miaowu" study and its revelation for local poetic study.North American Sinologists "Miaowu" research guides us a new road, the only way to deeper into the modern value of classical poetics is discarding the dross and selecting the essence, basing on local culture, avoiding prejudice and local centralization.
