This thesis attempts to explore the diverse styles of the Shijing in Contemporary North American Sinology by comparing the native traditional studies with overseas sinological studies. When facing the classic text of the Shijing, the study of the native tradition of the Shijing always centers on the handed down text, and tries to trace back an irrecoverable text of the Shijing,in order to construct the process of the Shijing from a collection of poetry to the classic text of the Mao Odes. However, different from the traditional study, which is based on the acceptance of the Mao,to explore the reasons for its formation, contemporary overseas sinology attaches great importance to the "living" style of the Shijing in the context performance, from the interdisciplinary perspective,we can see the multi-angle of view to explore the Shijing. After such analysis and discussion,we can see the different emphases of the study of the Shijing in China and the West, understand the value of the overseas perspective to the study of the Shijing, and open up the horizon of the traditional study of the Shijing. Therefore, the first chapter gives an overview of the research tradition of the Shijing, this paper attempts to explore the basic paradigm of the early studies of the Shijing by native scholars through the textual research of the solidified text, the exploration of the rise and change of Confucian poetics, and the analysis of the causes of the canonical form of the Shijing. It highlights a gradually stable pattern of the Shijing——the Mao,which is emphasized by the traditional research field of vision, and serves as a reference for comparison with the field of vision of Sinology. The second chapter discusses the "living" pattern of the Shijing in different contexts from the perspective of Sinology.By analyzing the functions and characteristics of the Shijing in the context of ceremony, teaching and quoting poems, this paper makes clear how the "living" form of the Shijing exists and is demonstrated. The third chapter explores the interpretive dimension of the Shijing from the perspective on Sinologist's interdisciplinary standpoint and orientation, through the three modern disciplines of music, literature, and history, pays attention to the multiple interpretations of the Shijing, analysis of these modern disciplines on the Shijing interpretation of the changes, but also dialectically see the Shijing on these areas of radiation. In addition, this paper will also comprehensively reflect on the limits of the studyof the Shijing on the two kinds of orientation in North American Sinology.Starting from the dialectical relationship between the localization and universality,on the one hand, sinologists in the oral study of the Shijing are more based on the appropriation of theories, but there are also debates on the theoretical limits and the localization of texts within them. Therefore,in the face of North American sinology studies,we should not only see the differences between the field of vision between the local research tradition and the overseas sinology studies in the reference framework, but also try to explore the new connotation and value of the Shijing in the perspective of comparison.
