The Study On Grassroots Women’s Political Participation Status Quo And Its Influencing Factors

The field of women’s political participation in China is facing manydifficulties and challenges. The overall proportion of Chinese women’sparticipation in politics is low. First of all, the percents of female cadres at alllevels are low, especially the proportion of senior women cadres, the principalfemale cadres and young female cadres. Secondly, it presents a series ofcharacteristics that women in China are taking more deputy positions ratherthan principle ones, more modal leadership without real power, morelow-level positions rather than high-level ones, more positions in marginalsector other than mainstream departments. Thirdly, the number, age and theprofessional knowledge structure of reserve cadres are not satisfactory. Inaddition, the proportion of women as leader of Villagers Committee andcommittee members is incompatible with the proportion of women inagricultural population. In recently years, although the status of women inChina has been greatly improved, there is still not significant development ofwomen’s participation in politics. Above all, the number of positions forwomen cadres in the election of Villagers Committee decreases and in someareas the number of female county official in Villagers Committee elections isdeclined. Second, there is significant unbalanced gender ratio of the centralcommittees in each party and regional politics. Third, the number of femalereserve cadres is far from enough. Four, the distribution of female leadershipis irrational that there are less women cadres as chief leaders or master thedecision-making power as well as less young women cadres. Through theanalysis of the theories and current situation of women’s politicalparticipation in Quanzhou region, this paper aims to propose realisticmeasures and suggestions based on the principle of seeking truth from factsfor raising the level of women’s participation in politics and promotingwomen’s self-development. This paper is summarized as follows:Introduction: This section analyses the background of women’sparticipation in politics, summarizes the domestic researches, and introducesthe research methods and the innovation of the research, as a foundation of thewhole research.The main part of the paper is divided into four sections. The first sectionanalyses the current situation of women’s participation in politics inQuanzhou region based on the analysis of questionnaires. The second sectionreveals the factors that constraint women in Quanzhou participate in politics.In the third section, in the light of the analysis of the first section, researchproposes several suggestions on how to raise the proportion and level ofwomen’s participation in politics in Quanzhou, respectively from the aspectsof policy, organization, public opinions and so on. The last section presentsthe conclusions of the research on the basis of the analysis above and raisesthe outlook of the development of women’s political participation in future.
