Elections are a very important component of the American political system. Theyare at the center of U.S. politics and full of excitement and even some entertainment.During the2012U.S. presidential election campaign, all the Chinese-American issuesgot more attention than before. President Barack Obama and Governor Mitt Romneybrought up Chinese-American issues to try to win votes. During the Cold War,Chinese-related issues in U.S. politics focused on national security. But now theycenter on economic matters like trade. The Chinese issue was mentioned many timesin the last presidential contest since the present U.S. economic downturn has madeAmericans more concerned about preserving their jobs and improving the economy. But a more important reason for the Chinese issue becoming more prominent is theprospect of China becoming ever more powerful in the world, especially Asia. Thisshows the remarkable achievements of the Chinese economy during the reforms of thelast35years. Accordingly, the economic gap between U.S. and Chinese economicdevelopment has shrunk. China is now a much more important international player. Therefore, with Chinese-American relations ever more important, trade and regionalsecurity have become ever more significant issues in the Chinese-Americanrelationship.
