Chinese American’s Political Predicament And Internal Division During The Period From Antagonism To Normalization Of Sino-U.S. Diplomatic Relationship(1949-1978)

The plight of Chinese Americans is closely related to Sino-U.S.relations and U.S.domestic political environment.Soon after the founding of the PRC led by the Communist Party of China,The relations between U.S.A and PRC deteriorated sharply and eventually broke off diplomatic relations,because the differences and contradictions of the social system,political ideology and national interest.In the early 1950 s,an anti-communist anti-china hysteria surged in America;as a result,the Chinese in America encountered intense political oppression from both the U.S government and the ―agent‖ of Taiwan KMT regime.In the Chinese American community,KMT and the affiliated traditional organizations employ every possible means to crackdown on dissents hand in hand,Those who showed any sympathy and support to the PRC were all under attack,even the press and enlightened persons which hold liberal or neutrality position were not immune.The U.S.government launched a massive investigation against Chinese in the name of infidelity and threat to national security,thus aroused much fear in the Chinese community.Under the turbulent social political environment at that time,The Chinese American lived as if on thin ice due to the intricate relations between China,U.S.and Taiwan KMT regime.In order to avoid political purge,many Chinese voluntarily or involuntarily took anti-communist stand to show their political loyalty to the United States and KMT.Until the late 1960 s and early 1970 s,a sign of thawing of Sino-U.S.relations appeared,this depressive situation began to change.The American--born Chinese younger generation and community social activists made great efforts to get rid of the control of KMT and pro-Taiwan traditional organizations in the Chinese community.They promoted the normalization of Sino-U.S.relations positively.
