Romantic is the part of the easily ignored by scholars in John Stuart mill’s thought. The rise of Romanticism was a response to the problem of modernity. The problem is a comprehensive expression about all sorts of issues of the industrial civilization and monetary economy. The core of that is the loss of the modern human subjectivity, and its most main performance is individual freedom. Romanticism use the conceptions of "organism","emotion","imagination","genius" and so on in their works. They are used to confront the pervasive oppression about individual freedom in modern society.To some extent, that romanticism is the first modern self-criticism.Questioning of Bentham’s utilitarian make Mill experienced a " spiritual crisis." Romantic thinkers Wordsworth and Coleridge’s work to help Mill tide over the crisis, From then on, Mill became interested in ideas of romanticism. Bentham’s utilitarianism founded on two basic formula:associationism psychology and the habit of rational analysis.By drawing on Romantic ideas, Mill divided happiness into junior happy and senior happy. Mill used the pyramidof Happy to confront Bentham’s "single happy" and the more and more flattening modern society. To make up for utilitarianism deficiencies of preference rational analysis and interests,Mill uesd emotional. Mill replace the parts of utilitarianism of Bentham not suited to the reality and human nature with the kernel of romantic.Might call utilitarian that Mill revised as " romantic utilitarianism."Sidgwick criticized that there are some logic flaws in Mill’s utilitarian. In fact, Sidgwick was standing on the positon of atomistic individualism to evaluate Mill. However, due to the absorption of the organism romantic ideas, Mill thoughts has been converted into a sort of organic individualism. This is closely related to the organic theory of individualism and " individual freedom." Individual freedom and the organism is two core concepts of romanticism.
