An Analysis Of Russia’s Arctic Strategy After The Financial Crisis Era

In recent years, with the global temperature rising, global climate has turned to bewarmer. The Arctic geographical condition is changing its strategic importance after thegradual melting of ice and snow. Since many states have formulated and issued theirArctic strategy, the issue is becoming a hot button in international politics.Russia is the largest country in the world covering two continents. Its uniquegeographical location determines its characteristics including Europe, Asia and the Arctic.The Russian arctic policy was made as early as in2001subject to its national interests.After the international financial crisis in2008, the competition of Arctic region states hadbecome more severely. These countries launched a series of new Arctic strategies, whichgreatly stimulated Russia. In fact, the Arctic issue is an international political andeconomic one, together with complex strategic interests.This paper starts from the analysis of concepts, defining Arctic, Russia’s Arctic region,and international actors related to Arctic. And using the theory of international strategyand geopolitical strategy to analysis from the history review, discuss the evolution andcharacteristics of the Russian Arctic strategy. Furthermore, the financial crisis has itsprofound influence on the Russian Arctic strategy and other Arctic states’ strategies.Finally, this article is focus on the forecast of the Russian Arctic strategic developmentand the reaction of China after the financial crisis era. The purpose of this article is toanalyze the Russian arctic strategy, provide the suitable suggestion to solve the Chineseproblem in Arctic. Competition in Arctic region grows, it is important to protect theinterests of China, and adjust strategy which accords with the situation of our country.
