In the last decade international life became much more complicated and at the sametime acquired an unusual dynamic. However, the most important actors playing leadingroles on the world stage remain state. It is the states, more precisely inter-state relationsthat primarily determine the nature, climate and direction of international relations. Thepurpose of inter-state relations is to create the most favorable conditions for thefunctioning and development of the states themselves. This view has become the basis of The analysis of the transforming relationsbetween Russia and South Africa. To understand today’s events and changes that havehappened in the bilateral cooperation between Russia and South Africa the analysisshould be started with historical observation. The first chapter is devoted to the history ofthe formation of relationship, it also describes the causes and consequences of the paththat both countries passed to improve their cooperation. To get a more complete picture of the current state of bilateral relations, the mostimportant aspects of cooperation of Russia and South Africa were considered in thesecond chapter. Russian-South African trade and economic cooperation was discussedin details. A military technical cooperation has become the integral part of thepartnership between Russia and South Africa. The third chapter of the paper contains an analysis of interests pursued by thecountries in development of bilateral cooperation. Russia is more interested indeveloping partnership with South Africa than South Africa itself, because Russia isgoing to return to the African continent and restore its influence in this region. However, the close corporation with Russia is also in South African best interests and for its benefit.South Africa seeks to take a leading position on the African and increase its internationalinfluence through interaction with Russia which is an active participant in internationalorganizations. The fourth chapter expounds the issues in development of bilateral relations associated with a lack of mutual understanding of national mentalities, cultural ignorance, unfavorable image of Russia as a state. This chapter also reveals general problems suchas missed opportunities, lack of modern investment flow, one-sided foreign trade. The fifth chapter summarizes all the work done. All aspects discussed earlier cometogether to provide an overall assessment of transforming relations of Russia and SouthAfrica. There are also examples of how Russian, South African, Chinese and Americansides differently estimate current partnership between Russia and South Africa. The developing relationship between Russia and South Africa cannot be calledsmooth. Even in present days when two countries are in an active phase of cooperation, the countries experience problems. However, the existing problems are not intractablebecause this relationship is mutually beneficial and very promising. Additionally, thesolution to current problems can always turn to be the implementation of potentialbenefits and prospects in current bilateral partnership.
