With the trend of global urbanization and urban modernization, thecity has become the focus in global competition; the international images ofChinese cities as the resource-based elements in global city competition hasbeen draw more and more attentions. Among the process of Chinese cities’international images’ shaping, the international media, especially thewestern mainstream English media have an important impact on theinternational image of Chinese cities.Based on the analysis of international mainstream media reports aboutChinese cities, we found that the images of Chinese cities in internationalmedia with complex and diversity, highlighting the economicachievements but reflect urban issues, concerns people at the bottom,significant events can greatly improve the city exposure in foreign media,the international media images of the city merged with state media images,and the fictionalizing way of reporting.By further in-depth analysis the international media Images ofShanghai and Nanjing, combined with the characteristics of Chinesecities’international media images, this paper give five suggestions forimprove Chinese cities’ international media images: follow the laws ofinternational news propagation, integration into the international system ofdiscourse initiatived, the integration of city’s images and national images,pay attention to the role of multinational enterprises in ascension Chinesecities’ international media images, advertising city images in internationalmedia, attention to local leaders’ role in improving the cities’ internationalmedia images.
