One of the fundamental characteristics of Chinese modern history was thecontradiction and interdependency between Kuomintang and the Communist Party,both cooperation and division, waves everywhere, thrilling. The KMT had a distinctideology, political status, the social base and political purposes,and the KMT was both"couplet" and "anti Communist". After the break of the Anti-Japanese War, in thepolitical atmosphere of pursuing peace and democracy, the talks between the twoparties restarted,but only to end in breaking down and lead to the outbreak of the CivilWar.In just a few years, the main military forces of the Kuomintang had beendestroyed,and in January,1949the peace talks between the two parties started.The Peking peace talks was the last peace talks between the two parties tonegotiate in China on the mainland.Zhang Zhizhong become a hot figure. Zhang wasthe only Kuomintang leader who had never fought against the army of the CommunistParty on the battlefield,and also had a good origin with the leaders of the CommunistParty.Therefore,Zhang was the best choice to be the chief representative of the PeaceTalk, during which Zhang did all he could do to trive for peace,and contributed to the“Peace Agreement in China”.However,the disagreements on “how to deal with warcriminals” and “whether to cross the Changjiang River” were giant gaps,whichcouldn’t be crossed by the two parties to reach a consensus.Even Zhang wasn’t able tomake up for these disagreements between the two,thus led to the breakdown of thepeace talk.The Peking talks were to rupture, and the KMT fled to Taiwan, but Zhang choseto stay in Peking and devoted himself to development of the new c In this paper, Ianalyzed from the historical background of Zhang Zhizhong’s participation in peacetalks in Peking, and discussed the role of Zhang Zhizhong in the peace talk, and whyhe agreed to stay in Peking after the talk. And I hope to find the cause of thebreakdown of the peace talk, and can have some reference significance for today’scooperation between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party.
