Research On Young People’s Motivation In Participating Volunteer Service

Volunteer service is the important symbol of social civilization, especially the young people participating in volunteer service has an important role in promoting further innovation and development of volunteer service career. How to effectively mobilize the youth to participate in volunteer service and establish a long-term mechanism of youth volunteer service is an important issue for the voluntary service development. And the effective mobilization of voluntary service and sustainable development are based on the mastery of volunteer participation motives. Given the consideration of domestic studies of volunteer service, the research on volunteer participation motivation is still in its infancy. It is seriously necessary to the study this topic.This paper did the research on the motivation of youth participation in volunteer service from the perspective of Alderfer’s ERG theory and achievement motivation theory by using the quantitative approach. The questionnaire survey of this paper mainly was carried out in 6 places in H province. A total of 1211 qualified questionnaires were collected and then analyzed by using SPSS17.0 software after questionnaires were transcribed.This paper classifies the motivation of the youth participating in volunteer service indicators by means of factor analysis. The study finds that the motivation of young people to participate in volunteer service can be divided into four dimensions:first is growth motivation, mainly including the growth of the psychological aspect or the ability and the expanse of social networks; Second is the achievement motivation, such as the altruistic value, realization of self-worth and the satisfaction of spiritual needs; third is fashion motivation, mainly spending the leisure time and the pursuit of a certain social trend; Fourth is conformity motivation which this crowd activity is likely to be either an active conformity, or the passive conformity of population pressure.This article also analyzes the difference of the motivation of youth participation in volunteer service. In this paper, factors affecting youth participation in volunteer service motivation can be divided into three aspects:one is the individual level, including gender, age and nationality; second is the family level, including marital status and family income; third is social factors, including politics, education, and occupation. The research shows:(1) personal factors. The youth at different ages have bigger difference in conformity motive and growth motive. The youth from different nations also have certain differences in conformity motive. But between gender and the motivation of youth participation in volunteer service is not necessarily linked. (2) family factors. Marital status has little effect on the motivation of youth participation in volunteer service, and just shows some differences in terms of conformity motive. Family economic environment has important influence on young people to participate in volunteer service. The difference of the motivation of the youth from different family environment is obvious. (3) social factors. The youth having different political landscape show no significant differences in participating in volunteer service motivation. However, the youth having different professional background embrace great difference. In addition, the youth with different degrees show significant difference in participation in volunteer service motivation, especially junior high school students in the process of participating in the volunteer service have a relatively strong growth motivation, achievement motivation, fashion motive and herd mentality.Suggestions are made after the analysis of the motivation of the youth’s participation in volunteer service first is to fully meet growth motivation and achievement motivation of the youth; second is to fully consider their different characteristics. A corresponding design is helpful to the youth playing a useful form of volunteer service; third is to perfect the mobilization mechanism, incentive mechanism and a long-term mechanism of the volunteer service based on the motivation of youth participation in volunteer service.
