As a rising power, Chinese aid in the Pacific islands region has been growing rapidly in its scope and scale since the 21 stCentury, which has attracted increasing attention among international society. However, due to the inaccessibility and isolation of Pacific island countries as well as lack of interest, Chinese academic research about the relation between China and Pacific island countries has been relatively week so far. In this essay, by gathering further more information on all aspects and using the theory and framework of foreign aid, Chinese aid commitments and overall size of practical assistance in the Pacific since 21 stCentury are introduced and analyzed systematically, including the main forms, fields and so on. Then selecting PNG and Fiji as study cases, makes a comparison of Chinese aid to PNG and Fiji by introducing the reason why China offers development assistance to PNG and Fiji, how much it gives, where, and in what form. In the end, I will summarize and assess objectively Chinese aid in the pacific, including the characteristics and positive impacts, then make policy recommendations on the basis of pointing out existing problems in Chinese aid. I believe, this article will help us understand the pros and cons of Chinese aid policy, which would prompt us to profit and avoid loss in the future work, enhance aid effectiveness as well as China’s international image.
