Objectives:The purpose of this study was to investigate current status of elder neglect in urban Long-term Care Facilities in city D of Inner Mongolia, and to analyze its risk factors. Then we tried to give some specific advice about preventing elder neglect and improving quality of life of the elders in Long-term Care Facilities. This study also aimed to provide a valid tool to evaluate the phenomenon of elder neglect in Long-term Care Facilities. Methods:Cluster sampling was used in this study. A number of 318 elder people were collected from 11 urban Long-term Care Facilities in the city D of Inner Mongolia in 2015, from September to December. The Chinese version of Sign of Neglect Inventory was used to inquiry the current status of elder neglect, and the Modified Barthel Index was used to evaluate activities of daily living of elder residents in Long-term Care Facilities. Results:1.The Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of the Chinese version of Sign of Neglect Inventory was 0.719,and the I-CVI of 12 items were all above 0.78, the S-CVI was 0.931,A scale of 5 factors was identified by exploratory factor analysis and the 5 factors could explain 60.71% of the variance.2.The incidence of elder neglect among elders from 11 urban Long-term Care Facilities was 25.2%, the most common problem among elders was lack of teeth, glasses, earrings and so on(64.8%), and the relatively less common problem was exaggerated/lack or unsuitable use of medicine(40.3%).3.The results of Chi-square test showed that: there was statistical difference between different education degree of the elders and the incidence of elder neglect(P(27)0.05); there was statistical difference between different income of the elders and the incidence of elder neglect(P(27)0.05); there was statistical difference between different source of income of the elders and the incidence of elder neglect(P(27)0.05); there was statistical difference between the elders who had sports or not and the incidence of elder neglect(P(27)0.05); there was statistical difference between the elders who attended health examination or not and the incidence of elder neglect(P(27)0.05); there was statistical difference between the number of the elders’ child and the incidence of elder neglect(P(27)0.05); there was statistical difference between the visiting frequency from child of the elders and the incidence of elder neglect(P(27)0.05); there was statistical difference between different activities of daily living of the elders and the incidence of elder neglect(P(27)0.05); there was statistical difference between the elders who had stroke or not and the incidence of elder neglect(P(27)0.05); there was statistical difference between the elders who lived in different institutions and the incidence of elder neglect(P(27)0.05).4.The results of Logistic Regression analysis showed that attending to medical examination regularly and having sports were the protective factors of the incidence of elder neglect, whose OR was 0.383(95%C.I.:0.207~0.710)and 0.358(95%C.I.:0.179~0.717)respectively. The prediction accuracy of this regression model was 79.0%. Conclusions:1.The Chinese version of Sign of Neglect Inventory had good reliability and validity to evaluate the current status of elder neglect in Long-term Care Facilities.2.The incidence of elder neglect in 11 urban nursing homes in the city D of Inner Mongolia was 25.2%, which exceeded the incidence of elder neglect in American and Israeli Long-term Care Facilities.3.The risk factors of elder neglect were elders’ education degree, having sports or not, attending medical examination or not, having stroke or not, activities of daily living, the number of child, the visiting frequency from the child, economic status, source of income and the ownership of the nursing homes. Attending medical examination and having sports were the protective factors of elder neglect.
