Underground Mark Six (UMS) has troubled China’s rural areas for many years, impacting severely on the rural families and society. It thrives despite government’s long term crackdown effort. Taking the example of one village of G city, the author looks into the operation of UMS activities and reasons for its popularity with information and materials collected from the author’s field study. The pattern of difference sequence, a theory put forward by Professor Fei Xiaotong, is introduced to explain the basis of establishment and expansion of the UMS sales network, that is, the characteristics of interpersonal relations. Investigating the examples, the author identifies the following reasons for UMS popularities.1. The blood and geographic relations contribute to the steady operation of UMS. The debt collectors and small bet bookies make full use of their relation network to build up and expand the sales network for UMS selling, with the debt collector as the connector and center of that network. Bettors usually go to their own debtors.2. The trust built on intimacy of people facilitates and secure the engagement. As a high risk gamble game, the debtor, debt collector and bookies secure their illegal returns based on the trust of people on their side. To explain, a debtor’s realization of return is dependent on the reliable relationship with the collector and bookies; on the other hand, the collector and bookies have to form a protection network in the government and ally themselves with debtors, so as to respond to government crackdowns.3. The current infrastructure and development in rural area fail to meet villagers’material and cultural demands. UMS virtually serves the purposes of both entertainment and fortune pursuit of those people. With analysis given, the author holds that UMS activity can be eliminated if we adopt the following methods. First of all, analyzes the characteristics of the pattern of close-or-distant relationship difference sequence, and take down the key players in the UMS activities. Second, take the effective measures proposed by predecessors.3. The UMS has caused many negative effects on villagers. Strive for a robust rural economy and enriched cultural life for rural villagers so that they can consciously reject purchasing UMS numbers or lottery tickets.
