This dissertation uses social capital theory to analyze the individual philanthropy behavior of Chinese residents, and uses personal social network, organizational participation, social trust, cooperation and reciprocity as the main dimension of measuring social capital. Combined with literature analysis, this paper proposes hypothesis of the impact of social capital on individual philanthropy. Then, based on the data of CGSS2012, the paper describes the overall situation of China’s individual philanthropy, and uses logistic regression and multiple linear regressionmodel to verify the impact of social capital and other factors on the individual philanthropy of China’s residents, the paper finally puts forward the interpretation framework of individual philanthropy and the suggestion to develop modern philanthropy. The paper gets the following conclusions: the participation rate of the residents in our country is relatively low. the educational level, political outlook and other factors had significant influence on the individual philanthropy behavior. The residents’ philanthropy activities have different characteristics in rural and urban areas. People’s charitable activities are focused in the areas of poverty alleviation, poverty, disaster relief, education,and so on. People’s charitable giving is mainly voluntary, but there are few government units or forced donations.According to the research, social capital is an important factor that affects the behavior of individual philanthropy. The people who has larger social network will be more likely to take part in charitable activities. The greater the heterogeneity of a person’s social interactions, the more likely it is to participate in charitable activities. A person who interacts with other people(besides amily and relatives) more frequently, will be more likely to go to charity. A person who has more different identities contacts and interacts with other people(besides amily and relatives) more frequently,will has greater probability to donate more. The more kinds of organizations a person is join in, the more likely he is to do charitable giving and volunteer service, the more money he’ll spend for charitable giving,the more time he’ll provide for voluntary service. The overall trust degree of Chinese residents is relative low. The overall trust degree of Chinese residents is relative low, and the trust degree of the administrative system has a significant positive impact on the individual’s philanthropy. The more frequently people use the Internet, the greater the possibility of charitable donations, the frequency of Internet useage has no significant impact on the amount of donations and voluntary service.The community which has good atmosphere of mutual help will promote people to donate. A sense of cooperation within a community will drive people to volunteer.This study also finds that, a person who has more economic income will be more likely to donate, and nonates more.But Personal economic income has no significant impact on the voluntary service, but has a significant negative impact on the time of the volunteer service. Economic factors has greatest influence on the amount of personal donations.
