The Festival Expression Of Ethnic Relations

With the development of the wave of globalization and modernization, contacts, exchanges and ethnic interaction are increasing, and the study on ethnic relations will become an important research topic in contemporary anthropology, sociology and other humanities disciplines. By taking Han society in Dazhai Bazi-a Yunnan multiethnic areas as the research object and using the special cultural phenomenon-’Jilong’festival on March 3rd lunar calendar as an entry point, this thesis intends to discuss the particularity of Han society in Yunnan minority area. Then by comparing the similar festivals named’Jilong’of other ethnic groups which also live in the Dazhai Bazi, combing with the theories of ethnic boundaries and ethnic relations, this thesis wants to show the expression of ethnic relations in the evolution of the’March 3rd Jilong’ Festival. As a special cultural event of Han people in marginal areas, the emergence and splicing features of’March 3rd Jilong’Festival was a result of the ethnic competition between the Yi people and Han immigrant communities in Dazhai Bazi in early time. Then about 100 years ago, the Hani people as a subjection of Han people entered in Dazhai Bazi, which enriched the ethnic relations in this region. Thus the relationship in this multi-ethnic region became more complicated. After the 1950s, the relationship between the Han and Hani transformed due to the politics. At the same period, the reasons why the Han people choose to re-organize the’March 3rd Jilong’ Festival and the formal emulation of’Jilong’Festival of Hani people both showed the expression of ethnic stratification in this region. In recent years, the emphasis on the village community and ethnicity of Han people through the’March 3rd Ji Long’festival was a kind of measure that the Han people use to get some preferential policies from the State, and also the festival became a stage to show their ethnicity on this account to shape the image. Ethnic group is a product of society, and the emphasis on it will change as the time changes. Considering the political, economic and historical factors, the Han people were seeking a consistency with ethnic group to build a harmonious ethnic relation by using the similarity which the’March 3rd Jilong’festival shows. Based on the study of ethnic interaction and ethnic relations, this thesis tries to provide a possible explanation on the differences and particularity of the Han culture in the immigrant community.
