As a multi-ethnic state, Myanmar is now undergoing a critical point of political transition. Therefore,it is a great challenge for Myanmar to build a set of institutional arrangements in order to safeguard the nation’s stability and democracy. Historically, Myanmar’s ethnic minorities are subject to unfair treatment in the economic, political and cultural realms. The article analyzes the national policy of the government authorities, as well as the behaviors and attitudes from democrats, armed minorities, non-governmental organizations and international forces on ethnic problems. We try to understand under which conditions democratic transition can provide a new chance for solving the ethnic problems. This paper regards the consociational democracy as an efficient solution to ethnic conflicts, the advocacy of grand coalition and overarching loyalty may promote the understanding between different ethnics. Myanmar is an essential member of China’s O ne Belt and O ne Road strategy, thus its domestic ethnic conflicts and political transition worth our much attention. |
