Objective: Univercity students’ volunteer service has far-reaching impact on society and plays an important role in material and spiritual civilization. The study aims to understand the awareness, attitudes and behavior of univercity students volunteering, and to discuss the main factors affecting univercity students to participate in volunteer service in order to provide targeted policy recommendations for reference for promoting undergraduate volunteer activities.Method: Inventory survey and case-control studies were used to sample 4500 univercity students multistage cluster randomly from universities of Tianjin in June to November, 2014. Students were conducted by a questionnaire about volunteer service recognition, attitudes and behavior. Self-designed questionnaire was based on a large number of literature review and combined with China social reality and the characteristics of students themselves. While the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire Short Scale(EPQ-RSC) was used to investigate personality characteristics.Descriptive and statistical analyses were concucted to understand the distribution and influencing factors. SPSS19.0 statistical software was used in statistical analysis.Distributions were described by frequency(%) and(mean±standard deviation). χ2 test,t-test and rank sum test were used in comparision of groups. Multivariate analysis was performed by using non-conditional Logistic regression model. All statistical tests were performed using two-sided test, test level at α = 0.05.Result: 4500 questionnaires were distributed and 4156 were returned, recovery rate was 92.36%.Content of univercity student volunteers about volunteer service is not enough, but the spirit of volunteerism is recognized. Respondents the concept of volunteering for "better understanding" and "very understanding" accounted for 22.5% and 3.9%,respectively; respondents the nature of volunteerism for "agree", "agree compared" and " strongly agree " accounted for 35.3%, 29.7% and 20.3%, respectively; for the spirit of volunteer service, respondents "agree", " relatively agree " and " strongly agree" accounted for 34.7%, 22.8%, 27.6%, respectively.Univercity students were very enthusiastic to participate in volunteering. 58.1% and 57.6% of students held positive attitude to volunteer activities and volunteers. But 60.0% neutral/negative attitude for the future of volunteering. 67.3% and 61.7%of respondents believed that it had a positive impact to participation in volunteer.Barriers of volunteer were: can not guarantee long-term services(53.0%), not know how to participate(47.9%), do not have time(43%) and unsuitable projects(36.2%).The volunteering incidence of univercity students was 60.8%, but the intensity was low. The frequency of cumulative times in 1 to 5(43.4%) and 6 to 10(24.1%)were higher. The frequency of cumulative time in 1 to 25 hours(42.4%) and 26 to 50hours(22.7%) were higher. Students participating in volunteer was not profession related(59.6%), and no professional training(84.1%). Mainly participation channel was college/class(53.1%) and most were short-term services(55.7%).Logistic regression model showed that origin residence is the medium and small cities(OR=1.321), in the higher grades(OR of grades three, four and five were 2.082,2.106, 3.631), the more part-time work experience(OR of short-term work, long-term work and both of the two were 1.477, 1.484, 1.916), being formal volunteer(OR=2.374), a better understanding of voluntary service(OR=1.789), heard "CYVA" and their activities(OR=1.253), do not/general understand volunteer registration process(OR were 1.338 and 1.735), knowing if school organizes activities regularly(OR were 1.580 and 1.695), generally/better understanding on school volunteer activities(OR were 1.615 and 2.270), considering it′s necessary for students to participate in volunteer(OR=1.615), were positive correlated to college students volunteering. Female(OR=0.825) and social humanities profession(OR=0.624) were negative factors for univercity students to volunteer. Conclusion: Students’ awareness of volunteering was low, but enthusiasm is high. The incidence of students to volunteer was high, but the intensity is low and professionalism is not enough. Sex, origin residence, grades, profession, part-time experience, being formal volunteer as well as awareness and attitudes to volunteering were related to participation of volunteering. Stronger propaganda on volunteer, broadened participation channels, improved organizations were recommended.
