In recent years, the crime rate of college students has increased rapidly, in which theft accounts for the largest proportion. With the scale expansion of higher education in China, the number of college students is increasing rapidly, and the crime rate is correspondingly increasing. Crime of theft is becoming more and more serious in the university. Considering the characteristics of the subject, the college students are prone to steal because they feel unbalanced and have complicated psychological problems. Considering the characteristics of criminal behaviors, the university students’ living space is relatively fixed, so the crime occurs frequently in the campus and usually takes the acquaintances as the object of theft. At the same time, the university students are lack of recognition of the seriousness of theft without precaution consciousness and legal consciousness. They cannot ensure the safety of their assets.This paper analyzes the characteristics of theft in order to improve insight into the causes, based on the relevant research achievements. For social reasons, social developments and cultural conflicts are the hotbed and soil of college students’ crime of theft. The growing gap between the rich and poor further stimulates students’ theft incidence. In the campus, the probability of occurrence of theft increases for lack of legal education and safety management. For family reasons, college students as the subjects of theft are usually lack of home education. They didn’t grow up in a wealthy family, even worse their family members held a previous conviction in most cases. In terms of individuals, the college students are lack of legal concept and have mental and psychological illness. Different factors and mutual influences lead to university students’ crimes. Considering the characteristics and the causes of theft, the prevention of college students’ crime of theft should promote the development of physical and mental health of college students, focusing on school and home, through appropriate management and education.This paper takes an empirical approach to discuss the current situation, types, characteristics and preventions of college students’ crime of theft with analyzing and solving problems. The paper is divided into four chapters: the first chapter is the concept and status quo of college students’ crime of theft. The second chapter summarizes the characteristics of college students’ crime of theft from the constitution of a crime, and combining the physical and psychological characteristics of college students. The third chapter explores the reasons for college students’ crime of theft. The forth chapter makes some suggestions for the prevention of college students’ crime of theft from both home and school.
