Countries at the rim of South China Sea have violated the territorial sovereignty of South China Sea, which belongs to China, for a long time.Based on the condition, continental countries’ Mid-ocean archipelago system, which has been practiced by several continental countries, is significant for China to defend its territorial sovereignty right in South China Sea. The international law and international custom provide sufficient theoretical foundation to continental countries’ Mid-ocean archipelago system.Actually, judicial precedent of international courts and international legal scholars’ theoretical perspectives both boost to establishment of the system. Furthermore, several continental countries’ practice provides positive influence for China to build continental countries’ mid-ocean archipelago system in South China Sea. The foundations of the system are base point and baseline that are important for China to designate its sovereign border. All strategies will remit complex situation in South China Sea and be significant for protect our sovereignty right.A system must have its positive practically values exactly as China build the system to solve the problem that Sovereignty right in South China Sea has been destroyed by countries at the rim of South China Sea. Especially, the foundation of the system is crucial for China to defend its territory when Philippines submitted the dispute with China to the international court. Upon the system, several islands shall be seen as whole which be used to assert its sovereignty right. China designates its sovereign border and claims its territorial waters and exclusive economic zone in accordance with the whole. With the situation that lots of islands been seen as a whole, a matters that some reefs can not hold territorial waters and exclusive economic zone accordingly to United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea could be avoided.The system affects the resolution of disputation in South China Sea crucially. And it answers the four basic questions Philippines presented in the application for arbitration. For defending the sovereignty rights in South China Sea, the continental countries’ mid-ocean archipelago system holds a crucial position.
