Wu Rulun’s educational investigation in Japan is a very important part of the national tide of studying Japanese system. His investigation was a start for so called the Era of Japanese Teachers. During that period, Western Learning propagated wildly in China. With his letters to Zhang Baixi, the recordation of his investigation held a great impact upon modernizing Chinese educational system, and his suggestions helped renewing Chinese educational thoughts. At the same time, it could be learned that the political realities in late Qing Dynasty hindered the reformation of Chinese educational system.This dissertation consists of five parts:A) Introduction. It describes the origin and meaning about this study, introduces the present research situation of Wu Rulun’s investigation, and explains the research idea and method. B) The Causes of Wu Rulun Investigating Japan. It shows the era background of Wu Rulun’s investigation, the causes of this choice, and his purposes. C) The Contents and Achievements of Wu Rulun’s Educational Investigation in Japan. Using some Japanese materials, as well as Wu Rulun’s diaries and mails, this part shows that many politicians and educators of Japan hold great expectation for this investigation. With these materials, it could not only be possible to recreate the whole picture of his investigation, but also be sure about the Japanese’s attitude and evaluation. D) The Impacts of Wu Rulun’s Investigation in Japan upon Educational Reformation in Late Qing Dynasty and its Inspiration. Wu Rulun’ investigation had him believe that, speeded-up education was far not enough for China, the popularization of common and higher education, as well as specialized education were the most important. With the recordation, his investigation held a great impact upon modernizing Chinese educational system. E) Conclusion. With a summary of this investigation, it is hope that, Wu Rulun’s experiences could avoid errors in the past, and inspire current educational development.
