The English Syllabus Standard for Vocational School was issued by the Ministry ofEducation of China in2009, which replaced the2000version. With the revising of newsyllabus, various textbooks published by different publishers have come into the market. Thestudents’ Vocational English Textbook (basic module) published by Foreign LanguageTeaching and Research Press was evaluated in this thesis.The evaluation theory of Theo Van Els was adopted. And the evaluation was conductedfrom two perspectives: the textbooks were evaluated with reference to2009Syllabus and theresults of questionnaires from students and teachers. At first, the textbooks were evaluatedfrom the linguistic knowledge and themes, language skills perspectives. Next, seven questionsdesigned by the author were given to verify the problems that appeared in the evaluation oftextbooks with reference to2009Syllabus. Then, the questionnaire of the English textbookdesigned by professor He Anping in South China Normal University was used to get thegeneral situation. The questionnaires fall into students’ questionnaires and teachers’questionnaires.In Qingdao,561students and46teachers who taught this course were chosenas the subjects from two shcools.523students’ questionnaires and46teachers’ questionnaireswere valid.The major findings of this thesis were:First, through the evaluation of textbooks with reference to syllabus, it was found that: thethemes kept pace with the times; pronunciation and grammar part could basically meet therequirements of syllabus; the language skills, listening, speaking, reading and writing couldmeet the needs of users, but the corresponding exercises were not satisfying, especiallywriting exercises. Pronunciation knowledge was not well covered and intonation part was notmentioned.Second, through the seven questions from students and teachers verified the advantages anddisadvantages appear in the evaluation of textbooks with reference to syllabus. According toProfessor He Anping’s evaluation theory, for students, the satisfaction index was80.00%andfor teachers, the satisfaction index was83.00%.Therefore, both students and teachers were quite satisfied with these textbooks.The evaluation was conducted not only from the objective but also subjective aspects. Itprovides some suggestions for the future textbook evaluation. The evaluation valuesVocational English Textbook (basic module) objectively and scientifically, and in addition,offers a better understanding of this textbook and some reference to the compiling oftextbooks in the future.
