English textbook is the core of the English curriculum resources and plays a vital role in English teaching,almost all the English teaching activities are organized around the English textbooks.It is also the represent of the English Curriculum Standard.In order to reflect the professionalization of the secondary vocational education and the practicality of the textbooks,making good use of the English textbooks,it is urgent to evaluate and analyze the English textbooks.A lot of researchers have studied on the evaluation of teaching materials since 1980 s.Based on their evaluation thoughts,the scholars abroad have designed lots of criteria.To evaluate English material for us Chinese users,we can't use these evaluation theories mechanically.For the construction of the framework of the materials evaluation,the related theories,current English curriculum standard and the users' needs should be taken into consideration.But the specialized research on the English textbooks intended for the secondary vocational schools from the view of the users' needs is inadequate both at home and abroad.With reference to the theoretical basis and data analysis,English for the secondary vocational students of Shandong Province is focused on in this thesis.No teaching materials can be perfect totally,there is no exception for this set of teaching materials.In the teaching practices,there may be some problems.So in this thesis,after studying the achievements acquired both at home and abroad,English for the secondary vocational students of Shandong Province is analyzed and evaluated from the following aspects: First,based on the Secondary Vocational English Curriculum,English is evaluated from the aspects of language knowledge,language skills and core quality.And next,a survey on the use of English through teachers' and students' questionnaires is conducted,so as to find out the problems of English in the actual use.This thesis aims to seek answers to the following three questions:1)Does English go with the requirements of proposed in the Secondary Vocational English Curriculum?2)Does the secondary vocational English textbook intended for Shandong Province meet the needs of the students in learning?3)Does the secondary vocational English textbook intended for Shandong Province meet the needs of the teachers in teaching?To conduct the research,the author adopted the questionnaire including Teachers' questionnaire and Students' questionnaire.With references to He Anping'(2001)senior high school English textbook evaluation criteria,some adjustments are made by the author according to the characteristics of the secondary vocational English and the real needs of the study.This survey was conducted in March 2016 in Zhifu District,Yantai City.The participants are 150 students who come from Grade one and Grade two of Yantai Urban and Rural Consturction School and the English teachers.The questionnaires were handed out to the students during the class intervals.The questionnaires were collected as soon as the students finished.Teachers' questionnaires were given dispersedly.In total,160 copies of questionnaires were sent out.150 of them were given to the students,114 copies were effective.Teachers' questionnaires added up to 10 copies,all of them were effective.As for the analysis of the questionnaire data,the author used the SPSS 17.0 data processing software to calculate the frequency of the options,the proportion and the effective percentage ratio.Charts are used to describe the results of the survey and the results are discussed below the chart.After the research,the author finds that:First,English is in line with the requirements towards the three dimensions proposed in the Secondary Vocational English Curriculum Standard,including language skills,language knowledge and core quality.English meets all the requirements for the four English skills proposed in Secondary Vocational English Curriculum Standards.The English knowledge provided is more than that needed in the teaching practices.Anyhow,the phonetic knowledge in Book 1 is comparatively inadequate,not all the Vowels and Consonants are included.The processing of the phonetic knowledge in Book 1 is too simple.And the secondary vocational English textbook intended for Shandong Province fulfills the goals of the core quality proposed in the Secondary Vocational English Curriculum Standards through designing diverse activities.Second,English can basically meet the needs of the teachers in the teaching practices.Most of the teachers hold that they like this version of English textbook.They thought topics are very close to the real life and appealing to the students.However,it is lack of the authenticity in the illustration of the pictures and words in the textbook;Meanwhile,the grammar items are not systematically arranged.What's more,the weak English foundation of the majority of the students makes it a great challenge for the teachers to conduct teaching practices.Third,English can basically meet the needs of the students in their study.The systematical way of presenting knowledge in English does great help for the students to optimize their knowledge structure.Some problems do exist,most of the students think that the warming-up can't stir up their interest.Their weak English foundation to some extent makes their communication blocked.The author illustrates theoretical and practical implications based on the findings,what's more,limitations of the study and suggestions for future study are given.
