With the development of globalization in social and economic life, a master offoreign language has become one of the necessary basic qualities for Chinese. In recentyears, the government has paid more attention to the reform of basic English education aswell. During English teaching and learning in middle schools, good readingcomprehension has played a vital role in students’ English learning. Meanwhile, readingmaterials are the main resources of English knowledge input during the whole readingprocedures. English textbook is very significant for senior students to learn English.Reading materials of textbook prove very good, written according to the main demandsof the New Curriculum Standard, which show the teaching of phonetics, words andgrammar integrately, train students’ listening, speaking, reading, writing and improvetheir language ability. After studying the related references, the author found that thereare so many articles including theoretical analysis and overall research into Englishtextbooks of senior high school. However, articles about actual use of English textbooksare comparatively in the minority and the articles about the use of it are a few. Thearticles which studied reading materials of the textbooks only indicate reading materialsare true and reasonable, or evaluate the reading materials according to the target of theNew Curriculum Standard to evaluate and draw the conclusion that they are suitable fordifferent students with different leaning styles and can stimulate learners’ interest.The thesis investigates the practical use of reading materials of this set of coursebooks in three senior high schools of Jingbian County to find out the problems in usingprocess and to give some useful advice,according to language knowledge,language skill,emotion and attitude,learning strategy and cultural awareness, which are defined in theNew Curriculum Standard, by means of the method of literature, questionnaire, classroom observation and interviews. During a specific investigation, firstly, the authordoes a survey among300students and30English teachers from three senior schoolsduring a specific investigation. And the collected data are analyzed by SPSS17.0statistical software. Secondly, the author does an observation to the reading teaching of15representative teachers without intervention. The author interviewed10Englishteachers, from the three senior high schools, to make clear some questions which are noteasy to understand in the questionnaire.The result shows that the teachers and students interviewed are generally satisfiedwith reading material of this set of course books, and they think the reading material canmeet the general demands of the New Curriculum Standard. However, there are stillsome drawbacks in English teaching. Some teachers are not skilled at cultivating thelearners’ application of comprehensive language, and improvement of emotion, attitudeand cultural awareness. In order to make full use of reading martial, cultivate students’application of comprehensive language and improve their emotion and attitude, culturalawareness, teachers should pay more attention to study the course book and syllabus,know well the demands of the New Curriculum Standard, change the concept of teachingand master some new teaching methods.
