With the change of our country' position in the international affairs and the multi-culture developmentof the society, as well as the fast update of knowledge, the fundamental education of China also carries outthe reformation. Ministry of Education has designed the Outline for Basic Education Curriculum Reform(Trial) and the English Curriculum Standard for Senior High School (draft) in2001and2003respectively.Meanwhile, in accordance with that, a series of English teaching materials and textbooks have beencompiled. These new English textbooks break the traditional teaching mode, focusing more attention onimproving students' ability of comprehensive language utilization.Facing these new textbooks, teachers are hard to avoid inadaptability to them. In such situation, whatattitudes do teachers have towards the new textbooks? In the direction of the new standard, how do teachersadapt to them? What methods do teachers employ to adapt the teaching contents scientifically? Taking theSenior High English (SHE for short)of Beijing Normal University Press (BNUP for short) for example, thisthesis investigate and analyze the adaptation of this textbook in Henan Province by means of questionnaireand classroom observation, aiming at surveying the views teachers have of SHE and the methods teachersemploy when adapting the textbook, finding out possible problems and difficulties teachers have andraising some feasible suggestions for teachers on adapting textbook on the basis of the research results andfindings. With respect to research objectives, the present study involves two major questions:(1) What views do teachers of English in Henan Province have about SHE?(2) What frequent ways do teachers of English in Henan Province adopt in adapting SHE?The main findings of the present study can be summarized as follows:Firstly, the English teachers in Henan Province can accept SHE basically. They think that the textbookbasically meets their teaching' needs and pays attention to the development of listening, speaking, readingand writing in a balanced way. Meanwhile, teachers have a common belief towards SHE: SHE providesrich and varied language skills materials for students, which can meet the needs of different levels ofstudents; the contents of SHE are arranged step by step; language in the textbook is mostly authentic; teachers basically satisfy with the page design.Secondly, the English teachers in Henan Province mainly adopt the ways of adding, deleting, replacing, revising and modifying to adapt textbook. In the process of adapting the textbook, some problems appear, such as replacing the contents in the textbook at will, blindly adapting the textbook, only adapting somefixed sections, etc… Meanwhile, the teachers also run into some difficulties while adapting the textbook, including being difficult to grasp the textbook, being unable to make use of teaching resources, needingcooperation between teachers, being short of enough teaching time, etc…The thesis consists of five chapters in the following: Chapter one introduces the background, thepurpose and significance of the present study; Chapter two illustrates literature review relevant to textbook, textbook evaluation, textbook adaptation, and theoretical base for the present study; Chapter three depictsthe research design, including the research questions and objectives, research methods, research subjectsand research procedures involved in the present study; Chapter four focuses on results and discussion ofquestionnaires and classroom observation; Chapter five summarizes the major findings of investigation, aswell as the problems and difficulties teachers run into while adapting textbook, proposes some feasiblepedagogical suggestions and gives limitations and prospects of the present study.
