In Study Of Chin Woo Athletic Association In Modern Shanghai(1910-1910)

Chin Woo Athletic Association was founded in the Late Qing Dynasty in Shanghai. The urban culture of Shanghai gestated to Chin Woo. Chin Woo developed from a martial arts group into a group similar to club, concluding cultural、physical and entertainment activities. The traditional martial arts were brought into cities in modern times, developed under the nationalist discourse. In the modern city, Chinese traditional martial arts met the western modern sports, and then began its modern transformation. It spread in the mass via modern organization such as the Chin Woo Athletic Association and its inheritance way changed. Under Chinese modern nationalism and Shanghai urban culture make Huo Yuanjia into a national hero. The Shanghai urban mass culture, represented by popular fiction and films, makes Huo Yuanjia as a legend. Chin Woo will be studied in two threads in this paper. One is the development history of modern martial arts, and another is the Shanghai urban culture.
