The Practice Study On The Intervention Of The Developmental Social Work Into The Chinese Migrant Women’ Development

At present, when both of the Chinese economy development and the GDP rank in the second one among countries all over the world, the overall people’s living standards have improved constantly. However, there are still groups of people living in the edge of cities, and the group of migrant women is a part of them. Although it has been proved that lives of rural women have been improved after migrating into cities, migrant women still encounter various challenges, such as low employment rates and income levels, lacking of adequate insurance in employment, poor living conditions and serious domestic violence. Therefore, it has been a significant issue to assist in migrant women obtaining more substantial development after they float into metropolises.Based on the current social context, numerous social organizations including social work agencies have attempted to intervene into this field. When social organizations begin to involve into the practices directing towards migrant women, the emphasis of services are laid on solving their realistic problems. Hence most of services focus on individuals’ deficiencies, and limit with solving the existing problems and catering temporary demands so that the individual counseling is the primary service method. However, it has turned out that the traditional social work model which emphasizes to conduct counseling towards individuals, groups or the community cannot respond the series of problems including insufficient employment, demands on livelihoods and needs for comprehensive development. Consequently, the developmental social work model focusing on social development in macro perspective is brought in to respond the current Chinese social development situations. Meanwhile, the theory using researches has also developed from the Women’s Development to the Social Gender and Development. Under the guidance of the Developmental Social Work, the social work services is expected to make up the deficiency of public services, and integrate various resources to provide more comprehensive and macroscopic services to migrant women. Through exploring migrant women’s own potentials, their self-abilities can be improved, the rights and capacities of participating into the policy decisions can be empowered, and eventually their self-development can be achieved.
