As a means of communication and medium of different cultures, language has been endowed with different cultural traditions and values, reflecting different ways of thought and life. It is typical of a language to be instrumental and humanistic. Mastering English as a communicative tool primarily requires a good knowledge of English culture, literature and customs. But in reality, English teaching in senior high school only emphasizes the practical functions instead of humanistic functions, that is to say, for a long time in senior high school English teaching has been paying attention to language skills and ignoring the cultivation of students’inner quality. This kind of teaching which always sets rigid teaching goals and simplifies teachers’roles and students’evaluation, will inevitably result in teaching separating from the reality and difficulties in implement humanistic education.The curricular standards in ordinary senior high school demands clearly that the students’emotions should be concerned about and students’capabilities and humanities cultivation should be improved in the process of English learning. Aimed at this, I take the research on students’humanities cultivation in senior high school English teaching as the subject. In theory, by consulting the concerned literature and integrating the involved research, the paper aims to expound the connotation and features of humanities, related theories supporting the status quo at home and abroad relevant research. In practice, to know the current situation of students’humanities cultivation, I take four high schools in Yizheng as objects of survey by the method of questionnaire and interview. The result of the survey indicates the reasons for lacking students’humanities cultivation in English teaching as follows:less satisfactory humane surroundings on campus and in English class, teachers’neglect of students humanities cultivation, not good use of humanistic value implied in the textbook, relatively backward teaching methods, single evaluation system and limited launching of second class activities. Finally, based on the combination of theory and practice, this paper puts forward some cultivating strategies on humanistic qualities for English teaching in senior high school.
