As a means of communication and medium of different cultures, languages have been endowed with emotions, aethetics and value judgement. On the surface, foreign language teaching is to teach different languages, but essentially it is the exchange of different cultures. The essential characteristic of foreign language is an interaction of practical and humanistic functionings. The practical functioning refers that students are equipped with an approach to communicate upon the process of language learning. While the humanistic one refers to the humanisties cultivation that students get from language learning which helps them to enjoy the beauty of language, reshape their personalities and realize the harmonious development both physically and mentally. Humanistic functioning is the representation of the requirement of quality education.Foreign language teaching in senior high school has been paid attention to language skills and ignores the cultivation of students'inner quality for a long time. In a word, it only emphasizes the practical functioning. This kind of teaching which aims at exam grades and enrolling rate but neglects students'overall development will inevitably result in some negative effects in terms of students'mental and physcial development such as highscore but poor competence.As the compulsory subject with rich humanistic essence in senior high school, English is an important channel to implement humanistic education. To know the current situation of students'humanities cultivation, the author takes Dengfeng No.1 Middle School, Songyang Middle School and Shiyan Middle School as objects of survey. By the method of questionnaire and interview, the result of the survey indicates students'lack of humanities in terms of humanistic knowledge, attitudes, manners and English learning habits. The problems existing in students'humanities cultivation in senior English teaching are as follows: less satisfactory humane surroundings on campus and in English class, teachers'neglect of students'humanities cultivation, not good use of humanistic value implied in the textbook, relatively backward teaching methods, single evaluation system and limited launching of second class activities.Based on the theories of humanism and affective teaching, this thesis aims to put forward some countermeasures referring to the investigation of humanities cultivation in senior high school English teaching by expounding the term of humanism and humanistic quality and analysing the humanistic embodiment in New Curriculum Reformation, the New English Curriculum Standard and English textbooks. These countermeasures are supposed to improve students'humanities in practical English teaching so as to integrate the practical and humanistic functionings of English language.
