This instructional design is concerned with Around the World in Eight Hours in Unit3,8B, Fun with English published by Yilin Press for the purpose of maximizing the effectiveness, efficiency and appeal of instruction. The theoretical bases of the instructional design are system theory and constructivism learning theory. Its significance lies in the following aspects: helping to arouse the students’ interest in learning English and grasp the text; helping to improve their reading and speaking ability; and providing some reference for the future English reading instructional design in junior middle schools. The instructional design is mainly made up of three parts: pre-design analyses of its major elements, design of teaching process and post-design reflections. Before the instructional design is made, its major elements are analyzed in terms of learners, teaching contents and teaching objectives. In terms of learners, firstly, the students are eighth-graders who are mainly from rural and suburban areas and they do not have a good foundation. There is a big gap between top students and poor ones in their studies, especially those boys seated at the last two or three rows, for those students are likely to be absent-minded in class. Secondly, many boys are not interested in English even with emotional resistance. Thirdly, compared with seventh grade, their learning content is much deeper and more difficult. In terms of teaching content, the teacher chose Around the World in Eight Hours, which serves the purpose of instructional design based on5D. In terms of teaching objectives, two main perspectives:language skills, affective factors and learning strategies were analyzed. The language skills in this instructional design focused more on reading and speaking. The affective factors focused on gradually fostering the learners’interest in English and improve their confidence. The learning strategies focused on key word strategy. The instructional design was made up of seven steps: lead-in with a brief introduction to the online travel; close reading with a focus on the first D: Design; close reading with a focus on the second D:Dream; close reading with a focus on the third D: Departure; close reading with a focus on the fourth D:Delight; close reading with a focus on the fifth D: Destination; and assignment with a focus on design of another game about the online undersea travel together with filling in the blanks with proper adjectives and changing active voice into passive one.The reflections on the instructional design were concerned with reflections on the teaching objectives, reflections on the teaching process, and revisions to the instructional design based on the reflections. In terms of teaching objectives, they are generally achieved. For reading, the teacher focused on leading the students to master the main idea of the text and how to play the game. For speaking, the students could be deeply involved in the class discussion during the reading process. For affective factors, students’ interest in English learning was aroused to a certain extent and they gradually developed confidence in English. In terms of the teaching process, the teacher found the overall design was successful except for two points. One is that students’ lack of background information of geography and some students could not voice the geographic words correctly which caused a negative effect on their expression. The second is that in the assignment. When checking the assignment in the next class, the teacher found that some students still could not change the active voice into the passive voice because of their poor foundation.Based on the reflections above, the instructional design is revised as follows:First of all, teacher should prepare some pictures and more background information of online travel in class, which could expand their horizons and arouse students’interest, thus making the lesson more lively and more attractive.Secondly, teacher should pay more attention to passive voice, for it is a new language point. Therefore, the teacher gave them more exercises to practice it.Thirdly, from the response of the students, it was a tough task for them to design another game about the online undersea travel, so the teacher reassigned the homework, that is, list the names of any five countries with their capitals and three places of interest in each country.
