The art of classroom teaching is considered as a unity while warming-up is the first and most important step of the whole process of English classroom teaching. Not only is warming-up an organic part of overall English classroom teaching but also a key to stimulating students’hunger for knowledge. A successful warming-up activity is the most important catalyst to the success of English teaching and appropriate exquisite warming-up can also have an unexpected effect on English teaching. If the warming-up in a class is designed properly, it can quickly attract students’attention, provoke their motivation and greatly arouse their enthusiasm for learning so that the classroom atmosphere becomes animated and classroom activities will go on smoothly. However, some teachers do not attach great importance to the warming-up activity in English teaching, saying that warming-up is a waste of time. They think getting straight to the point when starting a lesson is a better choice, but they fail to realize that effective warming-up activities can activate classroom atmosphere, arouse students’ interest and motivation to learn and develop students’ thinking so as to improve the efficiency of learning English. Under the New Curriculum background, in order to study the importance and necessity of warming-up in the English classroom teaching, get an insight into the specific situation in senior high school, find out possible existing problems and then take effective measures to solve them accordingly, the author conducts a relevant study.This thesis consists of five chapters.In chapter One, the author elaborates the origin, purpose and significance of the present study. Also, the organization of the thesis is presented.Chapter Two is the part of the literature review, in which the author presents some previous studies at home and abroad by studying the literature related to the subjects.In Chapter Three, the author demonstrates the theoretical basis for the study including Krashen’s Affective Filter Hypothesis and Input Hypothesis, Gagne’s Teaching Theory, Aesthetics Principles and Social Constructivism.Chapter Four is the research and the analysis. By means of educational experiments, content analysis, questionnaires and interviews, the author collects the first-hand information and then makes an analysis of it. Besides, a specific case is presented here to show the practical meanings in English classroom teaching, in which an excellent lesson was given by the author in the process of the research.Chapter Five is a summary of the conclusions of the study. The author expounds the major findings and draws the conclusion that warming-up in high school English teaching is significant and necessary. What’s more, the author discusses some practical warming-up methods based on the study such as Revision Lead-in Method; Direct Lead-in Method; Music Lead-in Method and so on. According to the research results combined with the existing problems in the practice of warming-up, the author made some suggestions. Meanwhile some limitations and significance for further research are explored here.
