School physical education is the foundation of lifelong sports, but also the keyto the reform of physical education; Physical education teacher is the central part ofthe school physical education,physical education teachers’ level of competencydirectly determines the success or failure of the reform of school physicaleducation;improving the physical education teachers competency level plays animportant role in physical education teaching.This study is based on Spencer (1993)“iceberg model”, using the method ofquestionnaire investigation, expert interview method, literature method,comparativeanalysis and mathematical statistics to understand physical educationteachers’competence status in the eastern of Henan Province,according to the conceptof competency PE teachers,sports teachers competency into sevendimensions.:teaching skills,attention to student,interpersonal communicationskills,occupation preference, research learning and improvement of teaching,respectthe students,personal traits. According to the analysis of current situation of physicaleducation teachers’ competence,draw the following conclusions:(1) On the whole, sports teacher competency in Yudong area is in highperformance, the total average score is3.84points, slightly lower than the overalllevel of physical education teachers competency, the competency level is different ineach competency performance dimensions,including teaching skill, occupationpreference eventually scored higher on interpersonal communication skills with lowscores.(2) Physical education teacher gender is imbalance (5.2:1), bringinginconvenience to open some physical education curriculum; in the age proportion,sports teachers under35years of age accounted for the total66.7%; in the title, titlehigh proportion is low, especially in the lower teach grade two to become the mainforce of PE teachers.(3)In the physical education teachers "professional title, age, education,gender"competency, the competency of gender is different,the female is slightly higher than male; in education,graduate and undergraduate showed relatively good; at age,between35-45years teacher competency level is the highest; in the title, isproportional to the level of competency title, title high competence performance.(4) The population in east area of Henan province is relatively intensive, most ofthe class size exceed the standard,physical education teacher shortage is serious, PElessons are more than65people/day, even more than100people, which also bringsgreat difficulty to the physical education teachers,affecting the physical educationteachers’ competency level.(5) A small number of students are in rural schools, most are concentrated in theprivate school;most of middle school students are “left-behind children”, becausefewer children communicate with their parents, communication ability is poor, adddifficulty to the sports teaching.
