Athletics, as a basic type of sports item, bears high level of cultural accomplishments and greattraining value as well. In the meantime, it is worth viewing and competing. A growing number ofresearchers has devoted into the study of improving current athletics teaching situation in regular collegesas the constantly weakening of athletics teaching. Nevertheless, its existence and development should beaccord with practical teaching demands. Only if the current problems are solved, can objectives ofchanging teaching situation be realized. The development of fundamental physical education requireshigher standard of teaching reformation, especially the educational reform in universities. In order to getthe comprehensive understanding of specialized athletics course of physical education majors, researchesand meta-analysis should be carried out indispensably to deal with these problems. By the method ofliterature research, investigation, survey, mathematical statistics and logical deducing, the author has drawnconclusions as follows.1. Athletics course setting for physical education majors in the universities in Henan province does notgoing well. Students choose athletics as specialized course only accounts for only5%in total. Althoughmuch attention of various institutions and colleges have drew on athletics teaching, it is a commonphenomenon that many colleges have to set this course intermittently due to the small percentage ofapplication.2. For physical education majors in general universities in Henan Province, teaching objectives forwho specializes in athletics consists of the mastery for fundamental theoretical knowledge as well asenhancing the ability of motor skill. There are several universities that have set goals of developingstudent’s researching capability, organizing ability, training and refereeing skill etc.3. Current situation of athletic course setting in regular colleges in Henan Province are nearly the same.Cases like heavy teaching task and short of class hours exist extensively. Average class hour ofspecialization of athletics majors in physical education is still less than270. time for athletics teaching isobviously not enough because athletics is composed of various kinds of sports forms.4. Teaching materials that have been used are united textbooks compiled by the authority educational institution. Higher educational textbooks are the main contents while book of Peoples Sports PublishingHouse are used in some of the universities.5. For physical education majors, examination and evaluation for athletic course in the generalcolleges in Henan Province tends to utilize the method of comprehensive testing of theory, skill and GPArather than the simple testing for theory or skill in particular. This illustrates that stresses are laid onstudent’s overall development.6. Currently, much significance have diverted into the training of the theories and skills. Thecultivation of students’ capacity for scientific research is neglected to some extent.
