Problem-solving learning is one of the main issues in education of newcurriculum standards in China. In recent years, the development of education at homeand abroad highlights that we should develop our students problem-solving capacities.International Chemical Olympiad, an international competition, is also oriented tostudents’ problem-solving performance. In order to understand the characteristics ofthe problems, this study is trying to analyze the items in International ChemistryOlympiad based on the perspective of problem-solving learning, which could help usto know what kind of problem-solving skills they emphasize, and what kind ofchemistry talents they are developing. All these attempts may be a guidance for ourown chemical education career and developing students’ ability to real solvingproblems.Firstly, the study i"s to deifne "problem and to build up the theoreticalframework by a literature review. Then according to the framework be build threemajor dimensions analysis indexes to a problem-solving task. These dimensions aretask complexity, task structure,and task control. What’s more, Research regards eachICho item as a task, and reflects the characteristics of the problem from theperspective of the analysis task features. During the process of problem solving, wemake qualitative analysis and the coding of quantitative analysis of the theoreticalproblems according to the indexes. On this basis, we need to make a furtherqualitative analysis to some specific items to ifnd out the feature of these items andget the problem-solving model. Atfer analysis and statistics has obtained research conclusions as following: thetheoretical problems of ICho represent the features of multitasking; the task structureof these items build strong structured knowledge that strengthens links betweentheoretical knowledge and procedural knowledge; during the process of solving thetheoretical problems of ICho,one need to be good at structuring and improvingtheoretical structure in actual; the theoretical problems of ICho in "task control’xanreflect the unique of thinking characteristics more clearly; the theoretical problems ofICho highlights core ideas of contemporary chemical teaching; the whole theoreticalproblems of ICho in problem-solving highlights on "human intelligence triple model".Finally, based on the study,the researcher offered some perspectives and limits.
