Task-based Language Teaching (TBLT) was proposed on the basis of foreignlanguage teaching and practice in the1980s.This kind of teaching approach emphasizes“Learning by doing”, which focuses on learners’ subject position in English teachingprocess. Language learners acquire language by completing a series of tasks. Languagelearning and language using should be well combined to obtain greater benefits. In theclassroom teaching, teachers set a task and ask students to complete the task in theprocess of language acquisition. TBLT draws great attention of the domestic scholars,who begin to introduce some theories of TBLT and do some valuable researches onTBLT.In the21st century, the globalization greatly pushes forward the Englishteaching.Raising the students’ English level is becoming more and more important. In2003, the Ministry of Education promulgates English Curriculum Standards forNine-Year Compulsory Education which clearly advocates the application of TBLT. Theapplication of TBLT is crucial for the reform of new curriculum and for theimprovement of the English teaching effectively. As people’s communication with theworld is becoming closer and closer, English reading has already become one of the bestways to get information for people nowadays. Moreover, Chinese parents and studentsconcern college entrance examinations a lot, in which students’ reading comprehensionability is also put great emphasis on. Meanwhile, reading comprehension for senior high school students is also put forward higher requirements in the ongoing reform of newcurriculum in Sichuan province. Teachers are also required to give full play to theleading role of teachers and students’ principal role in the process of teaching. What’smore, teachers are supposed to offer language atmosphere to students and stimulate thestudents’ needs and interest in learning. Thus, they can complete a language tasktogether.However, due to the long influence of traditional teaching methods, TBLT in seniorhigh school English teaching is difficult to use effectively and reasonably, especially inreading teaching. The writer taught English reading using traditional and TBLT teachingapproaches in two different classes in Senior Grade One in Mianyang NO.1MiddleSchool. The experiment lasted for one term, from September2013to January2014. Andthen the writer analyzes the experimental results. It turns out that TBLT can improve thestudents’ reading comprehension ability effectively. Meanwhile, The author also findsthat various levels of the students do have some problems in reading teaching in highschool. This paper aims to find the problems and put forward some reflections andsuggestions And the writer believes this research will be beneficial for the future studyand teaching.
