Reading plays a pretty important role in English learning. There is no doubt that high reading ability is significant to a L2 learner. "For many students, reading is by far the most important of the four skills in a second language, particularly in English as a second or foreign language."(Carrell,1983:1) In 2001 the Ministry of Education promulgated the latest Senior English Curriculum Standards. According to the standards, teachers should make every effort to develop students' reading ability. High school students, as a special English learning group, distinguish in many aspects such as learning style, learning motivation and so on so forth. The traditional teaching method and reading models are considered to be ineffective to some extent.Since the 1980s, task-based language teaching (TBLT), which is developed on the basis of communicative teaching method has become an important teaching method in foreign language teaching. Simply speaking, it is a method which attaches tremendous importance on tasks and students' active learning. It emphasizes the significance of communication and highly combines language learning and language use in practical life. This paper adopts classroom experiment, combining qualitative and quantitative study together and makes a comparison between traditional teaching method and TBLT. The data shows that in the class where TBLT is applied, students'reading ability really improves and they use reading strategies more actively. Students'learning interest and motivation are both improved.
