Undoubtedly, reading teaching is one of the most important parts in the classes of senior high school, and it has received wide attention both from teachers and students. Given the differences in our teaching contents and methods from abroad, nowadays in the evaluation of academic achievements, teachers pay too much attention to "quantity" rather than "quality" when it comes to assessment. Meanwhile, the present evaluating system attaches too much importance to knowledge learning and memorizing, instead of the real inner ability. Thus, it is difficult for the teachers to assess students’thinking level as well as their reading ability.SOLO (Structure of the Observed Learning Outcome) classification theory is founded by the Australian psychologist Biggs and her colleagues Collis. It is known as a "qualitative" evaluation method featuring grade level description. It pays attention to evaluating students’thinking pattern and thinking level while reading, so as to promote the reading ability. As a result, once introduced, the theory has attracted wide attention of scholars. However, the relevant research about the application of SOLO theory in English teaching in our country is still in its infancy, and its effectiveness is still under exploration, remaining to be practiced. This paper is rooted in the SOLO classification theory and explores its possible application in reading teaching in senior high school. Based on the tentative reading teaching pattern, and with the aim of evaluating students’ reading ability properly and accurately, along with enhancing students’ English reading ability, the author carries out experiments through teaching practice to confirm effectiveness of this theory and the teaching pattern. The results show that SOLO classification theory, to a great extent, can accurately evaluate students’ overall level; instructing and training the students in reading teaching based on the results of the evaluation comply with the ideas of the new curriculum, and it plays an important role in stimulating students’ potential, enhancing the ability of English reading, and improving the teachers’ teaching efficiency in reading teaching classes.
